In my experience games/competition film plots are usually mentioned purely in terms of spectacle or narrative suspense, but your article shows there is definitely more meat to be gnawed upon.

There is a tendentious link being created in my mind between this article and Morgan's one about the Saw franchise. Serial killer movies with their traditional genre conventions can be viewed as constructed game-narratives with teams (killers vs cops), arenas (urban spaces) and rules (shoot-outs, clues etc). In later examples killers often reflexively refer to the process as a 'game' from modern to post - i.e. Saw. However, this game/genre comparison jumps out of the narrow scope of serial killer films pretty quickly and into action films (i.e. Die Hard x), and if you keep playing reductionist, right through to any concievable film plot based on oppositions. Maybe the most appropriate way to follow this train of thought would be in a genre construction approach, comparing conventions to game rules. This raises questions about narrative film regarding empathy, spectacle and could be linked to the social (game of life) with possible results. Fun.

I am glad that CST3VAC is tackling Battle Royale on Thursday, although the readings were very abstract and I am curious how it's going to connect in class. It's a funky film. Very tongue-in-cheek!
