Actually it wasn't St. Augustine that screwed it up for everyone, or even Paul or Jesus. When you look that the fact that Augustine was a monk and raised a son, as well as many other high officials all the way up to the pope, you begin to see what happened. The whole reason the Roman Catholic Church does not allow there clergy to marry, is because up until about the time of Martin Luther and others of the Reformation these church officials began to promote their family members into various positions of authority. This became seen as a monopoly and whole families of clergy members were getting rich off the backs of the poor because of all this nepotism. This is one of the things of Martin Luther and others so of the Reformation begin to see in the church as corrupt and for good reason so to change the outlook in view of the church it became Tradition for priests, bishop, cardinals and the pope not marry. I mean if you really want to point out immorality during one of the more turbulent times of the church a couple of the popes the one I can think of off the top of my head Pope Clement had a mistress who pretty much ran the church.
I think is kind of naïve To look at one person and say to your fault that the Roman Catholic Church now has these teachings against such things.Many of the Saints or great doctors of the church didn't always agree with what the Roman Catholic Church had to say St. Benedict pointed out in his role that he didn't trust priests and that they had the hardest time entering a monastery because of that lack of trust. St. Aelred spoke of special friendships Monks and his monasteries and encourage that type of friendship. Just because Rome says that that is the reason why they're doing things it doesn't always mean that that is where they got their teachings delve into history little bit and you'll find out some very interesting topics. I'll leave you with this thought did you know that there's a transsexual pope, look it up.

Commentaries about lust are not in line with what is known about the teachings of Jesus and his perspectives after reviewing the apocrypha. It stands to reason that most of what is written in the canonized bible regarding sex and marriage would have been put there by those constructing a corporate institution with an eye toward absolute domination of the worker bees. Jesus was not himself even allied with the notion of his divinity, and his own teachings were geared more toward healing and brotherly love than any sort of approach to life and love that would be anything other than respectful of the importance of human empathy. I wish people arguing for the validity of the tales in the bible would tear their focus away from it just long enough to see that it is a construct, and that the real myth is that it is faithful to the to the writings of the apostles and the philosophies of Jesus. It's a corporate manifesto, for fuck's sake, and should not be taken so seriously as gospel. Even gospel isn't gospel.

I was wondering how long it would take for one of the faithful to chime in.

Moss, it pains me to ask, but did you read the whole article or just the opening and closing paragraphs?

This article doesn't suggest that Augustine was the origin of these ideas, rather that he developed them and is is responsible for cementing them in catholic doctrine. As you may have noted, I talk about contemporaries of Augustine who (by comparison) are wholly in favor of sex in and outside of marriage not to mention for pleasure. But this was never a theological essay, it was always intended to be historical. Which leads me to my next point;

Regarding Jesus, Moses and the rest of them, conservative views on sex are not necessarily synonymous with Augustinian views on sex. The assorted authors of the bible (or those who began the oral traditions that would eventually become scripture) were semtic people living in extremely challenging environments. Conservative views on sex are very important when you live in the Judean desert with no surefire way to control your population. Craft specialization, agriculture and (particularly in the last couple of centuries) contraception make the need for enforcing strict marriage laws less essential to keeping the population stable.

I submit to you that you are a fool for thinking that sex outside of wedlock is relevant as a contentious issue or cause for outrage.

Never mind Paul, how about Jesus? "If anyone looks at a women lustfully he has committed adultery with her in his heart." How about all the writers of the Bible starting with Moses? It is ridiculous to say that somehow this was all Augustine's idea, although he was a wise and eloquent man and did have a big influence on the thinking of the church. Sure perhaps the church -- I mean the Catholic one, as opposed to the true church -- used his ideas for political purposes. They have used many ideas for political purposes but that is why they aren't the real church. Anyway you people are fools if you don't want to keep sex within marriage and don't think that lust is a serious problem. You should learn something from the testimony of Augustine's life.
